Highlights Laboratory Excellence Accelerator Penzberg (LEAP)

Save the date on our next Study Tour!

We’re delighted to announce our next study tour on Monday, 29 September 2025. Thanks to the generous initiative and support of Christiane Glanzmann and the Roche team, we’ll enjoy an exclusive look inside their brand-new laboratory building—a project that really raises the bar. And special thanks also to Stephan Borger, who is steering the organization together with Christiane behind the scenes.

The preliminary agenda is right below on this page.

Our ticket shop is now open:

We have only 40 tickets available for the study tour, so make sure to secure yours early.

While we’re all together, we’ll stay on for Tuesday, 30 September to run combined workshop and networking sessions for our Knowledge Hubs (formerly Working Groups) and Project Groups.

Two days packed with insights, exchange and fun—We’re already looking forward to seeing you all again.

Scroll down for more information, and feel free to drop us a note if you have any questions.

LEAP consolidates Roche Diagnostics R&D on the Penzberg site, currently fragmented into 25 smaller lab groups, into one state of the art research building. Implementation of new ways of working is at the core of this project, such as centralized logistics and scullery, support organization, sharing of benches and equipment.

Additional focus is on sustainability and digitization.

  • 850 Workstations of which Lab 490 Workstations
  • GFA: 35.500 sqm, 6 storeys, 33 metres high
  • Project duration: 10.2020 – 10.2025 completion

Design Drivers

  • Decoupling of laboratory and office
  • Optimized, highly efficient laboratory building; optimized building depth; maximized length
  • Maximum flexibility in the location of flex labs and equipment halls
  • Transparency & visual connections between office and laboratory areas
  • Opportunity for spontaneous exchange / communication
  • Synergies through shared resources
  • Digital lab ways of working @Roche Diagnostics Solutions
  • Efficient logistics

A Zero CO2 Emissions Lab Building

  • High flexibility of use, modular design
  • Efficient and SmartBuilding: high efficient drives, heat and cold recovery, LED lightning
  • Timber façade and hybrid construction in the office, reduction of CO2-eq1): 700 to
  • Free Cooling for labs, saves approximately 600 MWh/a chilled water
  • Natural ventilation in the atrium for heat dissipation
  • High focus on low-pollutant materials
  • Shed roof and optimized glass to reduce the heat load
  • Photovoltaic 260 kWp
