Ventilation

The team is investigating all sustainability effects of ventilation in laboratory buildings, i.e. the ecological and economical as well as the socio-cultural - here, in particular, the occupational health and safety aspects.

The work includes hazard-dependent supply and exhaust air design, room air routing and air exchange rates, and, for example, ventilation questions on demand and ventilation management during restarts after accidents.

Planners

Working group 2 consists mainly of architects, laboratory and specialist planners. The focus is on the characteristics of sustainable buildings and laboratories and the sustainable planning and construction process.

The sustainable planning process designed in WG 2 will be tested, among other things, within virtual planning for the CUBE project for target accuracy and practicality.

Working Conditions

Of the three dimensions of sustainability, WG 3 mainly deals with the socio-cultural dimension (without neglecting the economic and ecological).

The main topics are occupational safety and ergonomics in laboratory buildings and laboratories, for which planners must provide adequate self-protection and performance-enhancing conditions during planning and construction. The working group also developed a corresponding seminar module for the EGNATON Academy, primarily aimed at those involved in planning and construction.

Lifecycle costing

Lifecycle costing records all costs and revenues that arise during the life cycle of a laboratory building to map its economic efficiency. The earlier we can estimate the total costs over the entire life cycle, the greater the influence on the structure and amount of the expected total costs.

This Knowledge hub also deals with how and, above all, when we can influence these total costs of a laboratory building in a cost-minimising way - for example, already in earlier planning stages.

Universities

As a project manager for laboratory projects at a Belgian university, I am obliged to work with very tight budgets. At the same time, sustainability issues demand considerations from a broader perspective and not merely in means of investment. Joining Egnaton allows me to enter a European network of experts who deal with these problems daily. Furthermore, it brings me into contact with reference projects outside my university or country and helps me define the proper answers to these questions—no further comment. The Chairman himself best describes this working group.

Material science

Which surface material meets the requirements for laboratory work? Which are robust and sustainable enough to achieve extended periods of use under adverse hazardous conditions?

Which universal processing properties are conducive to using this material in the construction and equipping of laboratories? The members of WG 6 have set down the results of their deliberations in a straightforward and carefully prepared Excel spreadsheet, which you can download here. They will continuously adapt the table according to new material developments.

EGNATON CERT

An important distinguishing feature between the certifications by the German NBB/DGNB and the European EGNATON CERT are the objects under consideration. The main difference is, on the one hand, the individual building at a known location and, on the other hand, a large number of devices at many unknown sites. The basic structure of EGNATON CERT corresponds to DGNB/BNB: Economic quality (22.5%) | Ecological rate (22.5%) | Human factors (22.5%) | Technical rate (16.25%) | Process quality (16.25%). The working group prepares the corresponding profiles for specific product groups.

Energy Consumption

Working group 8 deals with variables relevant to planning that influence the energy consumption of laboratory buildings. Such influencing variables are, for example, building location, laboratory areas, zoning and stacking of uses with comparable energy requirements, temporal utilisation profiles, ventilation concepts, ventilation technology and similar parameters. Due to the large energy consumption share of ventilation in laboratory buildings, working groups 8 and 1 (ventilation) work closely together.

Building Information Modeling

The working group explicitly investigates the sustainability effects of BIM in the planning, construction and operation of laboratory buildings. In addition, it supports other EGNATON working groups, projects or workshops with corresponding know-how. The importance of the working group for the ongoing digital transformation and the sustainability impact of laboratory operations is multiplying.

Technical Committee

The Technical Committee includes the chairs of all EGNATON working groups. The chairperson must discuss the work of the various working groups with the other TC members and, if necessary, coordinate or plan it.

In the field of technical coordination, we shall increasingly coordinate other activities, such as projects or workshops, via the TC in the future.
